Measures to Drive Improvement
Value of Products & Services
Environmental Impacts
Possible Measures of Value
•Sales or Net Value Added
•Product Volumes
Possible Measures of Impacts
•Proxies like total consumption of raw materials, or net energy used
•Particular consumption levels, eg water or reagents
•Net emissions, eg Greenhouse  gases, SO2, heavy metals, toxics etc
•Waste stream volumes
The underlying intent is to significantly decrease environmental impacts and maximise the value delivered
•A good starting point is a mass and energy balance, ie. a clear understanding of inputs and outputs of major and minor species
•Analyse behaviour and outcomes to be encouraged and then set metrics, not vice versa
•Tailor the analysis to specific business dynamics and local ecological issues
•Targets can be developed based on volume or percentage improvements, as well as the extent of opportunities realised or the fraction of hazardous materials recovered
